Top Gallery is a contemporary art gallery now based in Hongkong. It is one of the most pioneering galleries for contemporary art in China. Its concept was initiated by Lu Jianming, Wu Liang and John Zhang Long in 1999. The name is inspired by A Room with a View, a novel by English writer E. M. Forster which resonates Top Choice, the name of Lu Jianming’s company.
Lu Jianming, a well-known Chinese entrepreneur and philanthropist, finalised the name and founded the gallery in 2000. It was located at a prestigious location, at the top floor of Xianshi Building, Nanjing Road, Shanghai. The interior was designed by Wang Shu, the first Mainland Chinese architect to win the Pritzker Prize.
The exhibitions and social venues held in the gallery served as an example of operation a cultural space in Shanghai. In 2004 New Weekly reviewed it as ‘the new fashion landmark in Shanghai’. In 2005, it was nominated by Art Business Weekly as the 16th best gallery in China. The Top Gallery salons were seen as the cultural highlight of Shanghai. In 2008, Top Gallery started publishing art journal Top, a forum for promoting contemporary Chinese art.
In 2017, seeing art fairs was blooming in the Chinese art market, Lu Jianming decided to move the gallery to Hong Kong, embracing the international scene. The gallery has been collecting and presenting contemporary artists, and the key figure is John Zhang Long. John Zhang Long’s works of art were collected by many prestigious public museums. Top Gallery has also been working with different institutions and foundations, including members of the Pritzker family.

顶层画廊是一家位于香港的致力于推广中国当代艺术的画廊机构。它曾是引领中国画廊生态的重要艺术机构。1999年，在企业家吕建明、批评家吴亮和艺术家张隆的策划下成立于上海南京东路步行街先施大厦12楼顶层。顶层（Top）的名字来源于英国作家E. M. 福斯特的著名小说《看得见风景的房间》，与吕建明的通策集团的英文名Top Choice不谋而合。画廊的内部空间设计者为建筑家王澍（2012年普立兹克建筑奖得主）。
画廊所举办的展览和文化沙龙等活动带动了整个上海当代艺术的气氛。2004年画廊被《新周刊》誉为“海上画廊的时尚新代码“。2005年，画廊被《艺术财经周刊》评选为中国50强画廊第16位。2008年画廊又创办了《顶层》杂志，推广当代艺术。
2017年，随着国际艺博会在中国市场的成熟，吕建明决定移师香港，在好时中心开设了新空间。画廊主要代理和推广国际当代艺术家，并积极参与学术和商业的合作。其代理的艺术家张隆，作品得到了包括芝加哥美术馆在内的知名公众艺术机构的收藏。在今后顶层画廊还将继续与各方扩大交流与合作，共同营造世界当代艺术的生态。
